Devon Railway Centre
The Devon Railway Centre is situated on the site of the old Bickleigh station, which was built by the South Devon Railway in 1885. The station was boarded up after closure in 1963 but in 1997 was taken over by the Devon Railway Centre after which restoration and the laying down of a narrow guauge track began. The Centre is now a popular tourist attraction which delivers a unique railway experience and boasts a host of amazing attractions all in one place.
Great effort has gone into developing the site, which opened in 1998 as a result of work put in by the Gicquel family along with a dedicated group of volunteers. The miniature railway and the Edwardian Model Village were added in 2000 and 2006 and picnic and wildlife areas were developed in 1999 allowing visitors to enjoy local wildlife and the beauty of the scenery around the River Exe. The station has been brought back to its original splendour and is now a tea room.
The Centre says it offers an 'interactive fun filled day out' with unlimited train rides and the chance for visitors to become involved. Clipping tickets and waving trains off with flags is a popular feature with their younger visitors as do the Indoor Play Coaches, ball pool, indoor sand pit and the wooden railways.
On top of all this there's a museum, which is located in a former British Rail carriage. Here visitors can explore the history of the site and play interactive train games.
Admission to the Centre includes unlimited train rides, model village, model funfair, model railways, Wheal Beckie Mine, indoor soft play area, outdoor play areas, museum and riverside picnic site.
