Yearlstone Vineyard

Located just north of Bickleigh, Yearlstone Vineyard is a standout destination for viticulture in Devon. Established on a steep, south-facing slope overlooking the Exe Valley, its unique microclimate has earned it a reputation as one of the premier boutique wineries in the United Kingdom.

Here is a look at why Yearlstone became a benchmark for English wine quality:

Critical Acclaim & Media Profile

Yearlstone rose to national prominence in the mid-to-late 2000s, becoming a "media darling" for English viticulture. It was a frequent fixture on the BBC, appearing on programs like The Great British Summer and Oz Clarke’s Wine Trail.

Its rapid ascent was codified in 2008 when the World Wine Report (published by Dorling Kindersley) named it "England's fastest-improving vineyard." This period of growth saw the estate win over 30 competitive awards in just a four-year window (2006–2009).

Winemaking Excellence

The vineyard spans three hectares of carefully managed vines, supported by a modern winery capable of producing 100,000 litres annually. The estate’s success is largely attributed to the skill of Juliet White, who has been recognized by wine writers like David Moore as one of England’s top dozen winemakers.

The wines are celebrated for their diversity—a rare feat for a single estate—ranging from crisp, aromatic whites to surprising cool-climate reds.

A "Top Dozen" Destination

The vineyard's status was cemented in the literature of the industry, featuring prominently in Andre Simon award-winner David Moore's surveys of the best wines in England and Wales. What sets Yearlstone apart is its ability to produce "terroir-driven" wines—bottles that genuinely taste like the Exe Valley.

"You will find an excellent range of well-priced wines, each very different in style... something you will certainly not find at every vineyard." (Neil Wilson, Wine Writer)

Visitor Experience

While the vineyard is primarily focused on production, its location makes it a popular stop for those visiting the Fisherman’s Cot or Bickleigh Mill. The steep terraces offer some of the most dramatic views in Devon, though visitors should check seasonal opening times for the cafe and tasting terrace, as these can vary.
